Fell Race Series

Saltwell Fell Runners

How It Works

  • 12 races to choose from;
  • Your best 7 results count;
  • No minimum number of races or distances required to compete in the series.
  • For each race: 52 points are awarded to the first eligible man and woman; 49 to the 2nd; 48 to the 3rd and so on.
    • Note – no minimum number of races or distances required meaning if the men or women’s competitions don’t include participants with 7 races, the next highest total would be chosen to compare competitors results

New to Fell Running?

At Saltwell Harriers we love introducing people to fell running. Fell races might sound a bit intimidating but the fell running community is very friendly and welcoming.

Below are some frequently asked questions but remember you can always ask one of the many experienced fell runners at the club for specific advice.

What is a fell race?

A fell race happens off-road and often involves running up one or more hills (or fells), and/or reaching checkpoints. The distance, elevation and specific terrain varies from race to race. Many fell races are unmarked and let runners decide what route to take between checkpoints.

Who does fell running?

All sorts of people! You'll see a wide range of ages and abilities at a fell race, including a good proportion of ladies. Some races have an age limit requiring runners to be over 18.

What kit do I need for a fell race?

A pair of fell or trail shoes is a good idea to help with grip on muddy and slippy ground. Some races also have specific kit requirements to carry with you, such as waterproofs. Look at the FRA website or specific race details for more information.

Do I need to be really good at navigating?

Some races do ask runners to have and be able to use a map and compass. Other races are marked or very straightforward to follow. You'll usually find there's someone to follow during a race, but that doesn't mean they're going the right way! Saltwell members also regularly do recce trips where you can gain confidence on a route before a race.
